About This Spot

Stepping up to Aji Kiji on Fillmore Street feels like quietly slipping into an intimate sushi sanctuary nestled in the heart of San Francisco. The pace here is unhurried, marked by thoughtful gestures—a small crowd gathers before opening, sharing hushed anticipation, warmed by cups of green tea offered with subtle care. This thoughtful waiting is part of the rhythm, a pause that hints at the mindful experience ahead.

The air carries a gentle hum of quiet conversations and the faint rustle of beautifully wrapped takeaway boxes, each thoughtfully composed to delight as much in presentation as in flavor. There’s a distinct sense that every piece has earned its place, balanced with delicate touches like crisp pickles and artfully measured wasabi, inviting you to savor sushi as a moment rather than a meal rushed.

Though Aji Kiji operates as a takeaway spot, it feels far from transactional. Here, the experience stretches beyond the counter, rewarding those who make time for it—the sushi’s temperature and textures unfolding inch by careful inch, as recommended by the staff. It’s easy to imagine the vibrant yet peaceful street corners nearby becoming an extension of this calm, a place where the simple pleasure of sushi blends effortlessly with the city’s subtle pulse.

What lingers most is the sense that this is a place for discovery—a chance to encounter sushi not just as food but as a crafted experience, shared quietly and savored slowly. For those familiar or just arriving, Aji Kiji offers a warm, welcoming pause that turns takeaway into a small, personal celebration of taste and care.

Delicious sushi to go on Fillmore Street. Boxes are beautifully composed. I enjoyed the salmon combination box, which included several different prescriptions of salmon.

Super delayed review! I've been to Aji Kiji quite a few times now when I visit SF. It's best to go earlier and wait like 15-30 min in line just so you can get what you want...otherwise they sell out! For the value and quality, Aji Kiji is definitely a great spot! Street parking only in the area.

Waited 10 minutes before they opened. Second in line. They brought out tiny cups of hot green tea while we waited outside (it was breezy/chilly in the shade). Chose Kaisen Don (L) since it’s my first time and I’m not sure when I’ll be back. Told to wait 30-60 minutes before eating. Took it back to eat in my hotel room. Uni and negi toro were my favorite. Wish there was more wasabi. Pickled veggies were really good, too. Didn’t need another meal for the rest of the day. (Just dessert, lol.) Will try the 10pc Omakase Nigiri 6 Negitoro Maki Combo next time.

We bought 7 different kinds of sushi, including 8-piece omakase, bara chirashi, toro sashimi, fotomaki and hand roll. The entire package presentation was outstanding, even the wasabi, pickles, soy sauce, chopsticks and napkins are considered top quality. Must try for all Japanese sushi lovers.

This spot is take away but has really good value overall. We were told to wait about 30 mins before consuming so the food could reach the temperature they wanted it to be eaten at so me and my friend walked back to Japantown Peace Plaza to find shade on this nice day. The presentation is great and the food was tasty. I liked the addition of the pickles for a bright contrast against each piece of fish. When we got here there was a line but it took maybe like 30-45 mins from waiting to paying for our food. Very calm interior and straightforward ordering process. Would try again if spending time in the area or post shopping and heading straight home.

I treated myself to the Kaisen Don, walked over and picked it up for lunch. With tax, it came out to just over $78. Once I got there around 11:30am, there was no line, only a few people in the store. Staff was very polite, explained to me to have it in room temp for 30min for the best taste and offered me a pair of chopsticks & a bag. The shop itself is very simple and a beautiful space. I enjoyed it at a park and the quality was excellent. From the packaging to the flavor, you can tell they really care about the presentation — visually, taste wise, and the experience too. I was full half way (it's also a large bento), but it was so good and I wanted to finish it while it's still fresh, so I thoroughly enjoyed every scrape of it! Highly recommend :)

This take-out bento place definitely live up to the hype. We arrived at 10:55 am on a Tuesday morning. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. There were about 8-10 people already standing in front of us. The line moves pretty quickly as most customers know what they want or have an idea what they will get. The shop has a high-end clothing store vibe. It's clean and simple. SAKE DON (L) I don't know what kind of seasoning they put on the sushi rice but it is insanely good. It's sweet and savory at the same time. Hands down the BEST torched salmon I have ever had. The fresh salmon is equally delicious and melts in my mouth. My mouth is watering just thinking about the salmon. SUSHI 6PC & MAKI (M) The nigiri was incredibly fresh and unique. Each piece had a delicate flower or flower-shaped radish on top as decor. I admire their attention to details. The maki was perfection. The bentos are freshly premade each day. No modifications or substitutions are available. Do not come here hungry because it is high recommended that you wait 30-60 min before consuming. It is on the pricey side but I personally think it's very reasonable for the high quality. Strongly recommended if you like sushi.

This qualifies as an expensive lunch ($55/omakase box), but is much cheaper than a similar quality experience would be at a restaurant or even for takeout! My wife and I enjoyed the quality of the sushi and the maki, as well as the pickles. The lean tuna, flounder, striped jack, and salmon pieces we're out favorites. Would recommend as a nice treat!
